Prototyped using Alexander Craft’s original research, Digital Portobelo: Art + Scholarship + Cultural Preservation (digitalportobelo.org) is a collaborative, interdisciplinary, digital humanities initiative focused on an Afro-Latin community located on the Caribbean coast of Panama who call themselves and their carnival performance tradition “Congo.” It features an online, interactive digital repository of written and performed scholarship including: visual art, audio and video interviews and short contextual videos focused on the Congo community of Portobelo.
The project’s two primary goals are:
- To establish a dual language (English/Spanish) digital space for researchers to return the stories and interviews we have collected to the population most intimately connected with them;
- To foster a collaborative digital environment in which community members and researchers may share information, correct absences and errors, and create on-going dialogues.
